Looking for a nutritious summer treat for the kiddos? Make ‘em grape juice popsicles!

What You’ll Need

  • A popsicle mold set

  • A pound or so of grapes

  • Some water

  • A little fresh-squeezed lemon juice to add some “zing” to the flavor

Instructions

Wash the fresh whole (preferably organic) grapes well. Then blend the grapes in a Vitamix with some water. (I like to use a 1-pound to 1-cup ratio.) Add the lemon juice. Finally, pour into the popsicle containers and freeze.

Nutritional Advantages of Whole Grapes

The advantage of using whole grapes rather than filtering out the pulp and skin?

The whole grape contains resveratrol as well as other phytonutrients such as anthocyaninsm catechins, polyphenols and flavonols. These substances may contribute to a myriad of health benefits, including better heart health, reduced cancer risk and protection against certain age-related diseases (and even the aging process itself). Some studies have even shown resveratrol to mimic calorie restriction. And don’t forge the fiber!

The Problem with Store-Bought Grape Juice

On the other hand, store-bought grape juice is highly refined; contains no resveratrol and no fiber; and consists mostly of sugar water. For example, Kedem contains 35g/8oz (as compared with 26g for the same quantity of Coca-Cola!). (Eight ounces of homemade juice contains about 20g of natural sugar, but it also comes with all the other huge health benefits.)

The next time a hot day happens and your kids are out and about, treat them to this nutritious, filling and truly wholesome snack!
